Bulk de-icing salt is the most widely used chemical de-icer in Québec snow removal operations. It works by lowering the freezing point of surface water, initiating progressive melting of ice deposits and facilitating the work of mechanical scraping or blowing equipment. It is preferred on main arteries, strategic secondary roads, high-traffic intersections and all zones classified as priorities in municipal or industrial intervention plans.
The salt supplied by Sel Frigon is calibrated to ensure uniform application with existing spreading equipment. Its stable gradation prevents hopper clogging and ensures precise dosing, a crucial factor for respecting environmental thresholds imposed by certain jurisdictions or optimizing spreading cycles in contexts of shortage or usage restrictions.
The product is also compatible with pre-wetting protocols where they are in place. In this case, pre-wetting the granule with a liquid agent improves its adherence to the road surface and accelerates dissolution on contact with ambient moisture.

STABILITY, FRICTION AND BALANCED PERFORMANCE
The bulk salt-sand mixture fits into a mixed winter maintenance approach, combining chemical melting and mechanical friction. It is designed for areas where safety depends more on traction than rapid ice melting: lower-priority roads, sidewalks, residential zones, shoulders, service yards, low-slope access ramps and peripheral industrial parking lots.
The ratio between components can be adapted: standard formulations include 3:1, 1:1 or 1:3 ratios depending on the intended function. Sel Frigon can adjust the formula according to the customer’s specific needs, equipment used or current practices. Selected sand is dedusted, washed or crushed according to established criteria, ensuring stable anti-slip performance even in wet conditions or during rapid freezing.
This product is ideal for areas where interventions cannot be as frequent as on main corridors, but where an active layer must be maintained on the surface to limit incidents.

Bulk treated and abrasive salt
ENHANCED PERFORMANCE FOR CRITICAL ENVIRONMENTS
Treated abrasive salt is intended for demanding traffic conditions where standard salt becomes ineffective, either because temperatures are too low or because of the nature of the surfaces to be treated. Enriched with calcium chloride or magnesium chloride, it provides active melting at temperatures that can fall below -20 °C. The addition of a calibrated abrasive immediately reinforces surface traction before the salt has completed its dissolution cycle.
This product is strongly recommended for:
- steep slopes
- tight curves
- industrial ramps
- areas with frequent acceleration or braking
- logistics areas or approaches to sensitive buildings
Its use reduces spreading frequency while increasing duration of effectiveness, making it valuable in areas where reaction time is limited.
Bulk format for modular and centralized supply
All de-icing products offered by Sel Frigon are available exclusively in bulk. This approach allows municipal departments and contractors to quickly supply their distribution points, centralize storage before winter and rationalize logistics costs. Product is delivered directly into silos, domes or concrete areas provided for this purpose.
Sel Frigon adjusts conditioning, moisture rate and supply schedule according to the customer’s receiving capacity, short- and medium-term quantities required and negotiated volume agreements. Each delivery is documented, with complete lot traceability and a technical sheet corresponding to the ordered formulation.
This delivery method also makes it possible to plan supply progressively, taking into account anticipated weather conditions or consumption history.
