Sel Frigon
Anti-slip salt & sand mixture bulk
A COMBINED SOLUTION TO SECURE SLIPPERY SURFACES
Bulk anti-slip salt and sand mixture is a proven solution for winter management of roadways, parking areas and pedestrian zones in institutional, municipal or industrial contexts. It addresses a specific need: ensuring sufficient traction on frozen surfaces while promoting partial melting of ice. Through the simultaneous effect of a chemical de-icer (salt) and a granular component (sand), the product can be used preventively or correctively according to weather conditions and defined maintenance priorities.
This type of mixture is frequently used in winter maintenance operations on secondary roads, lower-priority pedestrian networks and areas with moderate traffic where user safety must be maintained. It integrates easily with most existing spreading equipment, making it a reliable logistics choice, particularly for technical teams operating over large areas.

Technical composition and formulation options
The mixture is generally made of sodium chloride-based de-icing salt and calibrated natural or crushed sand. The salt-sand ratio can vary according to specifications, with standard proportions such as 3:1, 1:1 or even 1:3 depending on the targeted use.
Sel Frigon adjusts the composition according to the customer’s requirements, whether for a public administration, industrial operator or snow removal contractor.
The sand used is selected for its density, gradation stability and anti-slip performance. Its gradation is consistent, ensuring regular flow through mechanical equipment and preventing mixture segregation during transport or storage.
The salt is road-grade, dry or slightly moistened depending on the season, and provides moderate melting action that helps loosen ice.

Specific applications according to service levels
This product is often reserved for road network segments identified as level 2 or 3 in municipal winter intervention plans, meaning sectors that require preventive or corrective treatment without requiring a high-performance de-icer. It is particularly useful in the following situations:
- Local roads with limited traffic
- Peripheral access roads to industrial facilities
- Open parking areas with low to moderate slopes
- Municipal sidewalks, pedestrian paths and crosswalks outside urban centres
- Service areas and circulation rings around buildings
In rural areas, the mixture is also used to secure segments along ditches or unpaved shoulders exposed to prolonged freezing conditions. Its action remains stable even without frequent machinery passes, making it a good compromise where logistics resources are limited.

Performance in winter conditions and effectiveness limits
The salt in the mixture works by lowering the freezing point of surface water, triggering melting that weakens ice adhesion to the roadway.
At the same time, sand creates a friction layer that improves vehicle or pedestrian grip, particularly during thaw periods or when sun exposure begins passive de-icing.
Product effectiveness decreases below -12 °C because standard salt no longer has the ability to initiate active melting at these temperatures. In that case, the role of sand becomes predominant, and the intervention is limited to creating a safer traffic strip.
For areas where extreme conditions are frequent, a treated product or specialized de-icer is generally recommended.
It is also important to note that sand has no melting power. It is therefore inert against significant ice buildup. The salt-sand mixture acts as a mitigation solution, not as a complete response to prolonged freezing conditions or severe freezing precipitation.

Storage, delivery and logistics constraints
The mixture is delivered in bulk to municipal facilities, industrial sites or logistics warehouses. Its conditioning allows fast and efficient handling with loaders, screw conveyors or automated loading equipment. It can be stored on a concrete slab, under cover or in a semi-open area covered by tarp.
The absence of additional chemical treatment limits agglomeration risks, even after several days of storage, provided prolonged exposure to humidity is limited.
Sel Frigon organizes deliveries according to required volumes, receiving capacity and the customer’s operational schedule. The product is generally available throughout the season, enabling rapid replenishment without requiring large stockpiles before winter. For operators serving several municipalities or extended territories, a staggered delivery schedule can also be established according to demand and precipitation frequency.
The product is compatible with the most common spreaders, including those mounted on pickups, tractors or 10-wheel trucks. It can also be applied manually for spot interventions on small areas.

Integration into a modular de-icing strategy
Anti-slip salt & sand mixture is an intermediate component in multi-level winter management strategies. It can be deployed alone in sectors where temperatures are moderate, or alternated with treated salt or liquid chloride depending on the situation. It also serves as a fallback solution for municipal departments when a more active product becomes temporarily unavailable.
As a complement to a liquid de-icer, it can be applied as a post-treatment to extend the effectiveness of the initial treatment. It is also commonly used in anticipation of an overnight temperature drop, when a de-icer alone would not be enough to maintain a safe surface until the next intervention.
This type of mixture therefore fits easily into an operational logic by zone, priority or customer segment, and can coexist in the same logistics silos as other formulations without risk of cross-contamination.

Our FAQ
To learn more about our product
What is the difference between a salt-sand mixture and a pure de-icer?
The salt-sand mixture combines a chemical melting effect and a physical friction effect. A pure de-icer acts only on ice, without immediate anti-slip effect.
In what contexts is this type of mixture most commonly used?
It is mainly used on secondary roads, low-traffic areas, sidewalks, access ramps or non-priority parking lots in snow removal plans.
Can the proportion of salt and sand in the mixture be adjusted?
Yes, proportions can be adjusted according to the customer’s specific needs, with standard or customized ratios depending on equipment and uses.
Is this mixture effective in extreme cold?
Sand retains its anti-slip effect, but salt loses effectiveness below -12 °C. In these cases, a treated product or specialized de-icer should be preferred.
What types of equipment can apply this product?
The product is compatible with all bulk spreading systems: augers, belts, chute spreaders or dump bodies, according to current practices.
