EFFECTIVE DUST CONTROL ON UNPAVED ROADS AND HIGH-USE SURFACES

Sel Frigon’s bulk dust control product is intended for public organizations, managers of unpaved road networks, industrial site operators and specialized contractors maintaining temporary or permanent surfaces exposed to fine particle emissions. Its main role is to stabilize granular surface materials to limit their resuspension in the air when vehicles, equipment or heavy machinery pass. In a context of summer dryness or constant traffic, this dust becomes not only a nuisance factor, but also a risk for health, road safety, equipment and surrounding infrastructure.

Available as a bulk liquid, this product allows rapid and uniform application over large areas, adapting both to supply constraints in rural environments and to performance requirements at large-scale industrial facilities.

Dust control

Technical formulation based on hygroscopic chlorides

The effectiveness of dust control relies on the action of a hygroscopic salt, mainly calcium chloride (CaCl₂) or magnesium chloride (MgCl₂), capable of attracting ambient moisture and holding it at the surface of aggregates.

This physicochemical principle creates a bond between fine soil particles and a thin moist layer that acts as a temporary binder, preventing dust from becoming airborne even after several days without precipitation. Calcium chloride is recognized for its density and superior binding power, making it a preferred choice for heavily used roads or less cohesive soils.

Magnesium chloride is often used in sensitive areas where the goal is to minimize potential impacts on aquatic or plant environments.

Solutions are delivered ready to use and can be applied neat or slightly diluted, depending on the site’s technical specifications, soil type and targeted stabilization objectives.

Dust control

Application areas in municipal and industrial environments

Bulk dust control is used in a wide range of situations where fine particles generated by vehicle traffic must be controlled: municipal gravel roads, rural unpaved roads, temporary site access roads, forestry maintenance roads, maneuvering areas in quarries and sand pits, logistics service roads in industrial parks and residual materials processing sites.

In municipalities, it is generally part of seasonal spreading campaigns coordinated by road maintenance departments, often in late spring or early summer, once soils have reached structural drying.

In industrial zones, it is used on a recurring or occasional basis depending on production cycles, activity levels or environmental permit requirements.

The product is also recommended for areas where dust emissions can disrupt the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment (e.g., port facilities, airports or transshipment stations), as well as logistics corridors sensitive to visibility issues or particulate deposits.

Dust control

Performance, application frequency and surface behaviour

The effectiveness of a dust control product depends on many parameters: soil type, compaction rate, gradation of the wearing course, traffic intensity, weather conditions, road slope and level of side drainage. A well-calibrated application on properly graded and compacted soil can maintain an effective binding effect for 4 to 12 weeks. In the event of heavy precipitation or intensive use, additional applications can be planned to maintain usable conditions.

Average consumption ranges from 0.5 to 1.2 litre per square metre, depending on the selected product, soil texture and initial dust level. For sectors subject to environmental restrictions or audits, precise technical sheets and compliance reports are available upon request, particularly to support municipal reporting files or nuisance reduction programs in industrial zones.

The product does not create a sticky film and does not permanently alter the soil’s bearing capacity. It is compatible with regular road grading, gravel replenishment and mechanical roadway maintenance cycles.

Dust control

Delivery, storage and bulk application methods

Sel Frigon delivers the product as a bulk liquid in adapted tankers, with direct access to the site or to an intermediate storage facility. Dust control can be applied using a tanker truck equipped with a spray bar, nozzle system or modified agricultural spreader. Application must be carried out outside periods of rain or excessive humidity, on a dry and stable surface. The objective is to ensure optimal penetration of the product into the first centimetres of soil and effective binding between particles.

For recurring customers, seasonal delivery plans or buffer stocks can be established to ensure continuous availability, particularly during periods of high demand (June to August). Sel Frigon also provides the technical assistance required to size volumes according to segment length, road width, slope and soil wear rate.

The product can be stored in double-wall tanks, mobile tanks or semi-permanent facilities on a concrete platform, with standard pumping devices.

Strategic role in an integrated dust management approach

Bulk dust control is part of a broader approach to managing nuisance from unpaved surfaces. It is not only a seasonal maintenance product, but a concrete lever for achieving objectives related to public health, regulatory compliance, reduction of local air pollution (PM10 and PM2.5 particles), or optimization of maintenance cycles for the unpaved road network.

In a context where expectations toward public organizations and businesses are increasing in terms of sustainable development, integrating effective dust control into operations becomes a differentiating factor. By ensuring better soil stability, reducing clogging in drainage systems and extending the service life of granular surfaces, this type of preventive intervention directly contributes to the overall performance of road and logistics assets.

Our FAQ

To learn more about our product

What is the difference between calcium chloride and magnesium chloride as dust control products?

Calcium chloride is more concentrated and more effective under heavy traffic conditions. Magnesium chloride is often preferred for its more flexible environmental profile.

How often should a dust control product be applied during the season?

In general, one to two applications per season are sufficient, depending on climate conditions and traffic level. Occasional maintenance may be required in some sectors.

What types of roads can be treated with this product?

Mainly gravel roads, forestry roads, industrial access roads, jobsite tracks or unpaved operating platforms.

Is this product regulated or restricted to certain uses?

No, but its use is governed by local practices. It is always recommended to follow supplier instructions and public tender requirements.

Does the dust control product leave marks or residue on vehicles?

The product may leave a light film on vehicles travelling immediately after spreading, but it is temporary and rinses off easily.
